"NATURE IS OFTEN HIDDEN, SOMETIMES DISGUISED, BUT NEVER CONQUERED."  ~ FRANCIS BACON

"Today, at the site of the Living Flame memorial, these words rang true. I walked upon the grounds that sit on Franklin Square between 6th and 7th St. Race & Vine, and nature has written its own signature on what is a
very neglected place here in the city of brotherly love.

Franklin Square is one of the five original squares founded by William Penn in his design of the city, but now lays in an inaccessible quagmire surrounded by 3 to 6 lanes of traffic on every side and unless you are ejected from your car coming off the Ben Franklin bridge you may never have the opportunity to set foot there.

Here amid the overgrown grass and weeds and the unkempt history which exist on this hallowed ground is a memorial dedicated to those Firefighters and Police officers who died in the line of duty. A design originally intended for the families of those fallen to pause and reflect on the sacrifices, those they loved gave in the name of their city. Today it sits as a forgotten token to the bravery of Police and Firefighters who protect our lives on a daily basis. Yet on this sunny spring day nature salutes them. The, wide open lilies and the fragrance of hyacinth fill the senses, and for all of the neglect to this man made monument nature gives its delight.

Thank you Mother Nature, and may you conquer all of our oversights."
